Scholarship Opportunity for the Nigerian Law School Bar Part II 2024/2025 Session

This public announcement is introducing the Johnny Agim, SAN Foundation [JASAN
Foundation] Scholarship Programme and Competition.

As part of the launch of the Organisation, as well as “The Legacy Dialogue” and inauguration of the #Legacy500 Elite Mentees, the JASAN Foundation is organising an essay competition for the benefit of final year 500 Level Law Students of all Law Faculties of Federal and State Universities across the Federation. Therefore, interested 500 Level / Final Year Law Students are invited to write an essay as well as provide a short video recording on the topic:

The essay competition topic is an opportunity for the Student Applicant to reflect on his\her education over the course of his/her stay in the university, ruminate on the legal practice opportunities that lie ahead and proffer suggestions on the required mentorship that the individual lawyer in particular and the legal profession in general requires to succeed in these opportunities.

10 (Ten) Applicants stand the chance to win scholarships / sponsorship opportunities to attend the mandatory training at the Nigerian Law School [Bar Part II] to fulfil the requirements to be called to the Nigerian Bar and pursue their legal practice dreams.  This prestigious scholarship covers the tuition for the one-year programme, providing a unique chance to excel in legal education without the personal financial burden.

A. Benefits:

B. Eligibility Criteria:

  1. Applicant must currently be a 500 Level Law Student from a recognised Nigerian Federal or State University.
  2. Applicant must have a minimum of Second-Class Lower [2.2] Grade point [evidence of
    current CGPA at the time of application should be included].
  3. Applicant must demonstrate exceptional academic achievement and potentials.
  4. Applicant must show verifiable proof of financial need.

C. Application Requirements:

  1. This contest is open only to Nigerian 500 Level / final year law students in Federal and State Universities.
  2. 1 Page Formal Letter of Application addressed to:
    The Nomination and Selection Committee JASAN Foundation, Abuja, FCT – Nigeria
  3. 1 Page Personal Statement [Maximum of 500 words].
  4. Scanned copy of a valid school and/or Faculty ID Card.
  5. Verifiable proof of financial need.
  6. Scanned copies of 1 Page Reference Letters respectively from two (2) Referees (1 of whom must be an academic from their university law faculty) both submitted along with the Eligibility Documents and ID Card as one (1) continuous document with the Title/File Name “References”.
  7. A written essay of between 1,500 to 2,000 words on the topic: “The role, challenges
  8. and strategies of mentorship in the Nigeria Legal Profession” [bibliography and
  9. references are excluded from the word count].
  10. All entries [inclusive of the Formal Letter of Application, Personal Statement & Essay] should be prepared in font type Arial (11-points Black), with double line spacing and page numbering as one (1) continuous document and submitted with the Title/File Name: “Application for the NLS Bar Part II 2024/2025 Scholarship”.
  11. Applicants shall, in addition to the essay, make a three (3) minutes video summarising and demonstrating the Essay. Using the IRAC Rule which is – Issue, Rule, Application and Conclusion, videos must have an introduction, a premise, argument and closing remark.
  12. The video is to be posted on Instagram, tagging @_jasanfoundation, using the
    hashtag #Legacy500, and a link to the video provided in the letter of application as well as the body of the email.

D. Rules / Guidelines for submission:

  1. This is an Essay Competition with a requirement for participants to submit a three (3)
  2. minutes video presentation alongside their written essay.
  3. The essay must be written in English.
  4. AI / Chat-GPT generated submissions are not eligible and will be disqualified.
  5. Entries should be submitted as one document in both Word and Pdf formats.
  6. Both Reference letters should be submitted as one document in Pdf format.
  7. Entries must not include any pictures or other graphical illustrations.
  8. Entries MUST NOT CONTAIN any indication of the Applicant’s name, school, number, email address, or other means of identification or affiliation. These details should only be included in your cover email when submitting.
  9. All essays must be original works specifically written for the competition and plagiarism of any kind will result in disqualification.
  10. Co-authorship of essay is not permitted.
  11. Applicants are to submit only one entry which Cover Email MUST CONTAIN only two (2) attachments viz:
    (a) Application as one continuous document, and
    (b) References  as one continuous document.
  12. Current contact information of each Applicant including phone number, email address and links to all of his/her social media platforms MUST ACCOMPANY THE ENTRY and be stated only in the Applicant’s cover email.
  13. HARD COPIES and submissions after the announced deadline will not be considered.
  14. Essays will be judged by an independent expert Panel of Judges.
  15. The winners shall be announced during “The Legacy Dialogue” and Launch of the “JASAN Foundation” which is scheduled for Friday, 13th September 2024.

E. What our panel of judges will look out for:

  1. Originality of thought;
  2. Factual accuracy, imagination, creativity and innovation;
  3. Structural flow, clarity of thought & expression, and grammatical accuracy;
  4. Depth of analysis;
  5. Relevance to the Legal Profession;
  6. Relevance to national, regional and/or international context;
  7. Clear policy suggestions, and/or pathways;
  8. Personal integrity of Applicant; and
  9. Conformity to contest rules.

Meet the Panel of Judges

John Oluwole A. AKINTAYO, PhD.

John Oluwole A. Akintayo PhD is Dean, Faculty of Law and a Professor in the  Department of Jurisprudence and International Law, University of Ibadan, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. His research interests include Constitutional Jurisprudence with emphasis on the Judicial System. He has written extensively on the Supreme Court of Nigeria; and has served on the Law Revision Committees that prepared the Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria 2000 and the Laws of Osun State of Nigeria 2002.

He was the 32nd Chairman, NBA Ibadan Branch (2018-2020), a member of the General Council of the Bar (2022-2024) and the 11th President of the Christian Lawyers Fellowship of Nigeria (CLASFON) (2021-2024).

Mr. Kehinde O. OGUNWUMIJU, OFR., SAN, FCIArb. (U.K.)

Kehinde Olamide Ogunwumiju, SAN is the Managing Partner at Afe Babalola & Co. His
exceptional legal expertise encompasses a diverse range of areas including Company and
Commercial Law, Admiralty/Maritime Law, Oil and Gas Law, and International Law and Practice. With a career spanning nearly two decades, and a track record of successful litigation and advisory roles, Kehinde has successfully led high-stakes litigation and advisory projects, positioning him as a trusted advisor in the Nigerian legal community.

He is particularly renowned for his work on Election Petitions, where he has been involved in every election cycle since 2007. His career is marked by significant achievements, including his elevation to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria [SAN] in 2017. In 2023, he was honored with the Officer of the Order of the Federal Republic [OFR] for his outstanding contributions to law, society and national development, by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association [NBA], the Chartered Institute of Insurers Nigeria [CIIN], the International Bar Association [IBA], and the Abuja Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines & Agriculture.

Chief Aikhunegbe ANTHONY MALIK SAN

Mr. Aikhunegbe Anthony Malik, SAN is the Founding/Principal Partner of A.A. Malik & Co. He is an astute legal practitioner who has been described as a dovish courtroom expert. Earlier in his legal career, he headed the Oil & Gas Section together with Arbitration Team of the Law Firm of Alegeh and Co.

He is a Notary Public of Nigeria, an Arbitrator per excellence and has taken part in several decided cases which have been reported by leading law reports in Nigeria. He holds a Master’s degree in Law, Master’s degree in International Studies and Certificates in Criminal Prosecution and Administration.

He is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association [NBA]. He is also a Fellow, Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria and Institute of Taxation; and a Certified Fraud Examiner. He has been recognised for his impact in society, and in 2022 he was conferred with the Chieftaincy title of “Adididi of Auchi Sacred Kingdom” (the community where he hails from).

Dr. Anne Uruegi AGI

Anne Uruegi Agi, PhD., is an accomplished legal practitioner with about two decades of experience. She holds an LL.M in Human Rights and Corporate Legal Practice from the University of Ibadan and a Ph.D. in Intellectual Property Law.

Starting as a judicial researcher under Hon. Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, former President of the Court of Appeal, Nigeria, to private legal practice for over 15 years, Anne’s legal career encompasses various fields, including research, litigation, commercial transactions, conveyancing, and corporate practice. She currently
serves as a dedicated law lecturer at the University of Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria – mentoring students and teaching diverse law subjects. She is also the
examination Officer of the Faculty.

Through her “LearnSpace Foundation”, an NGO focused on space education and awareness, Anne is a fervent advocate of space law and policy, working towards
promoting space science education, especially among young Africans. She is the author of the book, “Space Law 101 for Beginners,” which serves as an essential resource for those new to the field; and she is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association [NBA], NBA-SPIDEL, Women in Aerospace Community, International Federation of Women Lawyers [FIDA], African Women Lawyers Association [AWLA], NBA Women Forum [NBAWF], and the Advocacy Committee of the Women’s Forum.

Ms. Nneka AMUCHEAZI ESQ.

Nneka Amucheazi is a lawyer with over 19 years’ experience in Corporate Commercial, Company Secretarial, Energy Law & Policy and Power generation law practice. She is currently an Energy Consultant with Amucheazi, Ozioko & Co., prior to which she held various positions at Energia Limited (a Nigerian marginal oilfield company) including Principal Legal Executive and Team Lead for Contract and Commercial, Community Engagements.

Nneka’s skills are underpinned by over a decade of law practice gained in different capacities at various law firms in Nigeria. She is a Member of the UK Energy Institute [MEI], Member of the Nigerian Bar Association [NBA], Member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers [SPE] and an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Secretaries and Administrators, UK [ACIS], the Secretary-General of University of Dundee, Alumni, Nigeria Chapter, among other professional and charity engagements. Nneka is passionate about mentoring young people across board, through the SPE, Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum (NBAWF) and other platforms.

Nneka is the best-selling author of “Nigeria’s Power Structure: Competition or Monopoly?” Also, some of her articles have featured in the Africa Regional Forum Journal of the International Bar Association, as well as Oil, Gas and Energy Law Intelligence Journal.
