Who we are...
Registered on the 10th Day of July 2024 as an Incorporated Trustee organisation with Registration No.: 7680882 under the Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the “Johnny Agim, SAN Foundation” [hereinafter the “JASAN Foundation” / “the Foundation”] is set-up as an independent Non-Governmental Organisation [NGO], founded by the Learned Senior Advocate of Nigeria [SAN], Mr. Johnny U. Agim, SAN to help address the myriads of challenges facing young lawyers, the legal education, the legal profession and the administration of justice sector, as well as contribute to the development of law in Nigeria. As a senior member of the legal profession, he also supports the mission and objectives of the Council of Legal Education [CLE] and the Nigerian Bar Association [NBA] with over 180,000 lawyers on its roll as at 2024 [in 128 active branches across the 36 States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria] by supporting its programmes across the Foundation’s well defined thematic areas.
“Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen, and a push in the right direction.”
Set up primarily to foster mentoring and legal education sponsorships for young lawyers from year 0 [Final year university law graduates] to 10 years post Call-to-Bar legal experience, the Foundation has its keen sights on promoting excellence for lawyers and would collaborate with the respective statutory bodies that regulate the legal profession and legal education in Nigeria, including without limitation the following:
a. The Faculties of Law in the Federal and State universities across the
Federation,
b. The Council of Legal Education (CLE) / Nigerian Law School (NLS),
c. The Body of Benchers (BoB),
d. The General Council of the Bar (GCB),
e. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA),
f. The Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC),
g. The Legal Practitioners Remuneration Committee (LPRC),
h. The National Judicial Council (NJC), and
i. The National Judicial Institute (NJI).
Collaboration with the NBA shall be pivotal to the Foundation’s operations, as the NBA is the only recognised professional association of all lawyers admitted to the Bar in Nigeria; a member of all the aforementioned statutory bodies that regulate the Nigerian Bar and Bench, critical among which are the Body of Benchers [BoB] and the National Judicial Council [NJC]. It is also Africa’s most influential network of legal practitioners; and as such, the NBA is a strategic collaborative partner and legal resource pipeline for the JASAN Foundation, in addressing the challenges facing the legal and administration of justice sectors in Nigeria.
In furtherance of the foregoing, the Foundation aims to raise a robust legal institution for building a lasting legacy within the legal profession and judicial sectors in Nigeria through its thematic areas – human, corporate, judicial and governance institutions guided by the culture of excellence and a citizenry nurtured on transgenerational legacy building and service leadership for sustainable development.
